Oilers Playing with Fire Following Buyout

The Hockey Writers

Bluntly speaking, $3 million in cap space is probably all Holland was after. Darnell Nurse is up for a new contract next season, and a few extra million will aid in getting him re-signed. The Oilers are not in position to be thinking about the playoffs this season. If they make it, then fantastic, but they don't have the depth to compete, and are in salary cap hell due to Lucic's contract. The Oiler's first order of business is acquiring young players and draft picks, and somehow magically moving out unmovable contracts.

The Edmonton Oilers aren't just one or two parts away in free agency away from being contenders. They need top tier defenders, and top tier scoring wingers. Those aren't found in free agency. They're drafted.

Canucks vs Blue Jackets: OTL 4-3

Well, the Canucks didn't show up for the first two periods, hardly doing a thing, getting down 2-0. They did show up in the third period, and tied the game, 3-3, with the goalie pulled to send the game into overtime. Was there anything worth noting? The Canucks were over-matched, outworked, and outplayed for the most part. Although he scored on the power-play, Sutter's continued deployment on it does continue to baffle. He's terrible at zone entries. He's ace on odd-man rushes, but can't help in the cycle, which is a majority of the power-play. It's simply not a good fit, and is working against the Canucks, for the most part. There's better options.

Canucks axe coach Desjardins after 2nd straight missed playoffs

CBC Sports Willy's players skated hard, but his team's structure was poor. And he had trouble teaching the young players how to play hockey at the NHL level. It takes more than just effort. There's a certain level of knowledge needed in regards to the X's and O's that Willy D lacked. The next Canucks coach has a great deal of work ahead of them. They'll need to break down and rebuild the team's structure, entirely. They'll need to instill a better team culture, too. And this isn't a one year job, either. The next coach should be given at least two seasons to see the results. Can they improve on Desjardins record? Can they improve upon their own record?
